Fastest sailing to Australia

Published Apr 10, 2014

Getting a 45ft Ocean Rowing Boat to Australia is all about knowing the options available to you. Although price is important it isn't always about the rates.

The crew of Avalon the 45ft Ocean Rowing Boat are out to break the record for rowing across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Africa. Before they could start their record attempt the organisers had to get the boat to the start point in Australia. There were no container ships that would reach the start point in time, so the organisers completed a quotation request on to see if air freight was an option. It was soon apparent that air freight although quicker was far too expensive.

Key Air & Sea Limited a Freight Partner for in the UK came up with the winning bid offering a faster sailing using a Roll On / Roll Off service operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen from Southampton. The routing was from Southampton to South Africa calling at Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban before heading directly to Fremantle in Australia. The total sailing from Southampton to Fremantle was scheduled at 32 days a saving of over 10 days over the container vessels.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen were very supportive and offered a discount off their normal rates to get the record attempt back on track.

A representative from Key Air & Sea Limited was given permission to watch the boat being loaded and secured onto a 40ft MAFI Trailer at Southampton Docks.
