Operational refrigerated containers are plugged into refrigeration systems called Gen Sets during haulage and are then plugged in at the port and on the ship. They are set to the required temperature.

Non-operational refrigerated containers are used when the cargo needs to be protected from surges in temperature, but keeping the cargo at a set temperature is not required. The cargo is protected by the insulating properties of the container.
